SES 4th Grader Presents 'Loyalty' reading to the SISD School Board

As part of the Bastrop County: A County of Character program, Smithville Elementary students were invited to share their personal writing on the Character Word of the Month. The January Character Word of the Month is Loyalty, and Ana Luevano-Young, a 4th grader in Mrs. Schaatts' class, presented her paper at the SISD School Board Meeting this past Monday, January 23, 2012.

What Does Loyalty Mean to Me?

The word 'loyalty' means: the quality of being loyal. Loyal is to be faithful to a person, cause, government, or custom.
Loyalty means to me to be faithful to my family and country: to not cheat on, hurt physically or emotionally, or talk about anyone. For example: if a friend asks you to come play with them, and you said you had to go to the doctor but you really just went over to your other friends house, that would not be loyal to the friend you lied to. I show my loyalty when I say the pledge of allegiance to the flags. I do this in honor of all the people who serve my country. Loyalty also means to me that someone or something is there for me forever no matter what the situation is.
Loyalty is important because without it there would be no friendships and our country would not be united. Everyone would only think of themselves and I believe the would would be different from how we know it.
So in closing, I ask you to please try to show your loyalty to your family, friends, and country and mostly to yourself.

CHICAGO – The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) will sponsor two participants in the American Library Association (ALA) 2012 Emerging Leaders (EL) program. The AASL-sponsored participants will join 75 of their peers as the fourth year of the program kicks off at the ALA2012 Midwinter Meeting in Dallas.

Krystel Gutierrez of Smithville, Texas, and Jennifer "Charlie" Kelly of Rochester, N.Y., will participate in project planning workgroups; network with peers; gain an inside look into ALA structure and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity early in their careers. In sponsoring these two participants, AASL will defray the cost of attending the ALA 2012 Midwinter Meeting and the ALA 2012 Annual Conference.

Gutierrez, an elementary librarian at Smithville Elementary School in Smithville, Texas, graduated from the University of North Texas in 2009 with a master's degree in library science. In her application to the program, she noted "I hope to broaden my experiences and to explore possible roles as a professional actively contributing to the library field. Exposure to all the ways in which librarians are changing the profession will energize me as a professional, and that inspiration will benefit my library, school and, most importantly, patrons." Gutierrez is highly involved in school committees, recently serving on the district's social media policy committee to develop written guidelines regarding staff and student use of social media. In her letter of support for Guiterrez, Cheryl Burns, assistant superintendent of Smithville Independent School District, wrote "Krystel is an individual who has integrity, competitive spirit, and a love for learning. She is a person that numerous students enjoy being around and accomplish many goals under her direction. Krystel has utilized her technology skills to individualize instruction in her library and encourage new instructional strategies within the school."

Kelly graduated from the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York, in 2010 with a master's degree in library science. She has worked most recently as the contract library media specialist substitute for the Rochester City School District in Roberto Clemente #8. While at Roberto Clemete #8, Kelly was the recipient of two grants which provided materials to the school: a $100 Funagain Grant to purchase games for the library and a $5,000 Laura Bush Foundation Grant securing updated materials for the library's collection. She was also a recipient of the AASLBound to Stay Bound Travel Grant, which allowed her to attend her firstAASL National Conference and Exhibition recently held in Minneapolis. In describing why she applied to be an Emerging Leader, Kelly wrote, "As a school librarian, I need to have great interpersonal skills to help cultivate relationships and build trust with the community. I need to be my own advocate in the community and demonstrate the impact the school library media center has and how it is vital for the students' learning. By participating in the Emerging Leaders program, I can continue my growing involvement in the field of librarianship at a greater level."

Following the kickoff session at ALA 2012 Midwinter Meeting, the ELprogram will grow and develop in an online learning and networking environment for six months, culminating with a poster session showcasing the results of the project planning work at the ALA 2012 Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif. Participants commit to taking part in all aspects of the program and may have an opportunity to serve on anALA, division, chapter or round table committee or a taskforce or workgroup upon completion of program.

"AASL is proud to once again sponsor two Emerging Leaders," said Carl Harvey, AASL president. "Part of AASL's mission is to develop leaders in the school library field, and the Emerging Leaders program is a wonderful opportunity to nurture members new to the profession. We look forward to watching Krystel and Charlie grow as school librarians and working with them as they continue to empower students to be lifelong learners."

What loyalty means to me is being faithful, a good friend, and helpful.

For example a dog and cat were friends and the cat was in a burning house and the dog knew. So he went in the house and started looking for her. Suddenly he heard her scream (meow). He found her, grabbed her by the neck, and took her out of the burning house and saved her life! Now that's what I call loyalty!

Loyalty has the same meaning as truth. Which reminds me loyalty is exactly the same thing as being honest, truthful, and true.

Why loyalty is important is because if we didn't have loyal people where and how would this world be?!? Loyal people turn my frown upside down! How do loyal people affect you?

Cooking Show

Our Fall Junior Harvesters created a video to submit for the Fuel Up to Play 60 Cooking Show contest. To watch the video either click the link below or the Junior Harvester tab at the top of this blog's page.

The Junior Harvesters created the recipe for the cooking show, and the quesadillas will be served in our school cafeteria this semester. Our students also filmed and starred in the video. Wish us luck as we compete against other schools in the Fuel Up to Play 60 campaign to keep kids focused on eating healthy and getting 60 minutes of exercise a day.

I ran across a post by Maria Shriver on her blog that I shared with the elementary staff today during our weekly meeting. I read 'A Message from the Hopi Elders' during the holiday break and felt moved by it. I wonder if the letter was written from a literal viewpoint or if it is more modern full of symbolism. Either way, when I read the message I immediately knew I would share it the first week back to school. I've attached the letter and hope you too find a positive message for the new year.

You have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour.
Now you must go back and tell the people that this is The Hour.
Here are the things that must be considered:
Where are you living?
What are you doing?
What are your relationships?

Welcome to 2012!

The hallways were empty of our most prized posessions today, but we know they'll all return on Tuesday, January 3rd. We can't wait!

As everyone was busy 'catching up' with each other and sharing stories from the Christmas & New Year Break, the hallways began to livin' up. Teachers and staff were busy preparing for the return of our students. Copies were being made, last minute changes to lesson plans and activities for the week were finalized, and rooms and hallway walls received their last makeovers.

Of course we will begin our new year with our weekly Rise & Shine Assembly Tuesday morning at 8am in the cafeteria.

We hope our families know they are always invited to attend any and all of our events. Lunch is served daily from 10:45 - 11:45 in 30 minute increments. (5th grade @ 10:45, 4th grade at 11:00, and 3rd @ 11:15) Come join your child for lunch any day. You will enjoy our cafeteria meals - the kids do!

Recylce Bowl Video Competition

We need your help for a chance to win money for our school's recycling program. We are currently collecting and weighing the recycling on our campus as a part of Keep America Beautiful's Recycle Bowl competition. Our students are competing against schools across the country. Our recycling crew, the TREO Team, have been steadily working to collect, weigh, and deliver our recycling to our recycling trailers. We saw another opportunity to promote recycling through the KAB's Recycling video contest. A group of students got together and created a short video and now we need your help.

We need for you to view our video on YouTube and then 'like' the video. Please share the link to our video with your family and friends. This video is a great way to keep people in the know about the importance of recycling and making good choices for our environment.

Fall Festival a Success

If anyone stayed home on Thursday night and missed our annual Fall Festival, they missed a ton of fun! The cafetorium was packed with families playing games, enjoying the spaghetti dinner, and hoping their ticket was the lucky one as they dropped them in each basket's bucket.

A great big THANK YOU goes to the Elementary Booster Club and the staff of Smithville Elementary in putting on a wonderful event. We took a chance on moving the festival to an evening after school and it paid off. Kids and their families had their fill of food and fun.

Thank you again for coming out and supporting our school.

Smithville Elementary Fall Festival

Time: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Where: SES Cafetorium

Festival Fun
There will be fun activities to enjoy including face painting, ring toss, hoop shoot, fishing
booth, cake walk, and more! Each of the activities will require tickets to participate, so
pre-purchase those tickets now. A sheet of 26 tickets can be purchased for $7 that
night or ordered in the weeks prior to the event for only $5. One ticket per sheet is
designated for a Door Prize entry. Kids, come dressed to win at the costume contest!

The Baskets
Classes will choose a theme for their basket and ask students to bring in donations of
items that match the selected theme or to bring in cash to purchase the basket items.
This year the baskets will be won using a raffle method instead of the silent auction
style used in past years. All of the baskets will be on display on stage in the SES
cafetorium. You can then place the tickets in the containers associated with the baskets
you want to win. There is no limit to the amount of tickets which can be bought or
placed in containers! At the end of the evening, the ticket containers are collected and
the winning ticket is drawn.

The Dinner
For $5 (pre-purchase) or $6 (at the door) you will enjoy a spaghetti dinner complete with
a salad, garlic bread, and tea. Invite your friends and family to dine with you at the
school or to come get a take-out box to go!
Remember that proceeds from the Fall Festival go toward school equipment and
supplies which benefit our children and teachers of Smithville Elementary School!

National Walk to School Day 10.5.11

It was still dark at 7:00 a.m. this morning, but that didn't stop those interested in participating in National Walk to School Day from meeting on Gresham Street for the walking school bus.

Students from the Elementary and Junior High schools were well represented and eager to walk to school. Some walked to the meeting place while others were dropped off by their parents.

Knowing how important it is to have Safe Routes to School our community leaders and school representatives were on hand to walk with the kids. Those folks included Mayor Mark Bunte, Chief of Police Rudy Supak, Adena Lewis with the Chamber, SISD Superintendent Dr. Rock McNulty, SISD Child Nutrition Director Candy Biehle, Jr. High Principal Andra Sparks, SES Principal Ana Murray, and SRTS organizers of the walk Rebecca Byrne, Judy Bergeron and Jill Strube.

The kids were fantastic and seemed to enjoy the walk. The weather was absolutely perfect and the escort of the Smithville Police Dept. was an added bonus for safety when crossing intersections. The Jr. High Student Council also participated with the support of Stacy Campbell.

We appreciate the support of our community and look forward to other events and activities supporting Safe Routes to School.

Smithville ISD School Opening Update

Smithville ISD intends to resume a regular school schedule on Monday, September 12, 2011.

Bus routes will run at regular times. Buses will pick up displaced students at Smithville Recreation Center and First Baptist Church between 7:30 and 8:00 A.M. Displaced students temporarily housed outside the Smithville ISD boundaries, please contact the SISD offices at 512-237-2487 for pick up arrangements.
There will be assistance for those students and staff who continue to be displaced due to the fire. School supplies will be available for students in need and lunches will be free for all students the week of September 12-16, 2011.
The Smithville ISD Employee Relief Fund for staff and students has been established at First National Bank of Bastrop. Cash donations can be made at any First National Bank branch. Cash or gift card donations can be made at any Smithville ISD office.

SISD Closes School for the Remainder of the Week

Smithville Schools will be closed for the remainder of the week. Additionally, all extra-curricular activities have been canceled for the week.
A number of our school families have lost their homes or have been displaced this week. We are compiling a list of these families so that we can offer our support. If you would like to donate Brookshire Brothers, Wal-Mart or HEB gift cards or money to the families you may make donations at Central Office or at one of the campus offices starting on Monday, September 12, when we hope we will be able to resume school.
Please continue to keep the fire fighters, volunteers, families and our community in your thoughts and prayers and please be safe.

The new year begins Monday, August 22, 2011 and it's easy to see that students are ready! That was very evident at Meet the Teacher Night last Thursday.

Students and their parents steadily streamed in from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. eager to meet their new teachers, see friends, and visit with teachers from years past.

I love Meet the Teacher Night because of all the excitement and anticipation to begin the new year.

Monday will be another exciting day as the official 'Opening Day' of school. Students and staff will spend the first 30 minutes together before joining the entire campus for our weekly Rise & Shine Assembly.

The first week of school is always an exciting time and we are looking forward to a great year. The doors open at 7:30 a.m. and the day begins at 8AM.

We can't wait to see all the beautiful faces that make Smithville Elementary an awesome place to be.

A.C.E. Association of Citizens for Education

Erika O'Neal and Tina Smith of A.C. E.(Association of Citizens for Education) spoke to the SISD staff at the general convocation assembly Monday morning about their commitment to the students and staff of Smithville. The passion and love for this community moved the audience to a standing ovation.

Later Monday night, Erika and Michele Rutherford spoke at the School Board meeting again sharing their commitment and passion for the success of our schools. The vision of A.C.E., together with parents, community members, educators and business partners, will assure that every child of our community has the best educational experience possible so they may live up to their highest potential.

A.C.E. (Association of Citizens for Education) formerly Save Smithville Schools, is dedicated to supporting education in our community by bringing awareness to issues and funding through Teaching Grants and Program Enhancement Grants. Campus Staff Development Day 1

After a full day Monday with the entire district, teachers and staff began inservice on the campus Tuesday. We spent the day with Dr. Grace Gutierrez learning about the new State of Texas Accountability test (STAAR). Today's information was the beginning of year-long training that will prepare us for testing in the Spring.

Afterwards, teachers worked on decorating the hallways during our yearly 'Hallway Happy Hour'. This activity allows our teachers time to work together and enjoy a little pizza while doing so. Our theme this year is 'Rockin' & Rollin' to Success' and the theme can be seen creatively throughout the campus.

Restoration Plan Approved

Last night the Smithville ISD Board of Trustees met and approved a Restoration Plan for the upcoming school year.

As most know, the Spring semester brought about changes to the district that left some with a heavy heart. The work of Central Administration and our Board of Trustees brought together a plan that will benefit the students, staff, and district as a whole.

Summer School Coming to an End

Students attending summer school this year have worked hard in preparation of the 3rd administration of the TAKS test in Reading and Math. The last official day of summer school is Wednesday, June 29th. Students taking the D-Bundle in Reading will return on Thursday to complete their test.

Each day students received solid review and reteach of concepts based on the TEKS. In math you will see students working on their bar graphs tracking their success. You will see students showing their work and proving their answers. In reading you will see students being pushed to think by working through quotes and explaining their meaning beyond the literal point of view.

Students and teachers alike are ready for next week and as would be expected have a "Bring It On!" attitude toward the TAKS test.

Smithville Elementary was honored at the Keep Texas Beautiful's 44th Annual Conference in Austin on Wednesday, June 22, 2011. The ceremony was held at the AT&T Executive Education & Conference Center on the University of Texas campus.

The conference goals were to celebrate and recognize the achievements of youth and community leaders (of all ages), civic groups, businesses and governments; offer an array of educational sessions to relay pertinent, innovative approaches to community beautification, waste reduction and litter prevention; and provide unparalleled networking opportunities and exciting presentations from knowledgeable experts and those with a passion for the environment.

The Keep Smithville Beautiful committee nominated Smithville Elementary for this award based upon the trash pickup, recycling, electricity awareness, and gardening programs at the school. We are excited to have been nominated and will proudly display the 2nd place certificate at the school.

Emma's Summer Business

While many students were dreaming of sleeping late, watching a lot of TV, playing their favorite video games and other fun stuff, Emma Campbell was busy planning her summer business: Emma's Dog Walking & Washing Service.

As you can see by the flyer below, Emma offers a full line of services to keep your pooch cool, fit, and clean this summer. I for one can say she and her employees do a great job. Sami, and her little sister, Sunny, both enjoyed a nice bath at Emma's. The were treated like queens: brushed, bathed, fluffed-up, and brushed again. They even received a small bag of treats and a ribbon for their collars. Sami and Sunny were ready for the red carpet!

I highly recommend Emma's Dog Walking & Washing Service and will be a repeat customer.

Smithville ISD employees gathered in the main cafetorium for an afterschool ice cream social to honor employees. The first to be honored from Smithville Elementary was retiree Marilyn Demerson for her 30 years of service in SISD and 36 years in education. Marilyn spent most of her years in the district working at the Jr. High and moved to the elementary a couple of years ago. Thank you Marilyn for your service to the students of our community.

Smithville Elementary School Receives Keep Texas Beautiful Youth Award

(Smithville, Texas) – Keep Texas Beautiful announced Smithville Elementary School as a winner of the 2011 Sadie Ray Graff Education Award on Friday, May 20. The Sadie Ray Graff Education Award is one of twelve categories in the Keep Texas Beautiful Youth & Educator Awards and recognizes the efforts of educators and educational institutions who encourage youth involvement and promote the Keep Texas Beautiful mission through environmental education.

The award honors Sadie Ray Graff, an educator in San Antonio, who began using the Waste In Place curriculum in 1979.

Each year, Keep Texas Beautiful recognizes the efforts of young people, educators and educational institutions that promote beautification, waste reduction and litter prevention through environmental education and community activism.

Seven years ago, Smithville Elementary (SES) began a "Grounds Crew" program that helped build pride in the school and helped clean school grounds for which students needed to apply. It was extremely successful and is still running. From this program, the Tutoring, Recycling, Environmental Organization (TREO), for which students must be nominated into the position of responsibility and trust, began about six years ago. This current school year was the first full year of the "Watt Watchers" program, and is the inaugural year of the "Junior Harvesters." The Junior Harvesters built garden beds, planted, tended and are now harvesting strawberries, lettuce, and so on. They are using the foods in the cafeteria and have sponsored taste testing for the campus and their parents in an open house. The Grounds Crew and TREO programs especially have a great impact on keeping the school beautiful by taking care of trash and recycling. From January 2010 to December 2010, a CAPCOG grant provided additional resources for their recycling program, which has stepped it up even more. Students are nominated to or apply for the positions each semester, and last year in the 5th grade alone (the grade at which most of these programs become available for student participation), out of 135 students, only 20 did not get involved.

Award winners will be recognized at KTB’s Youth & Educator Awards ceremony on Wednesday, June 22, at KTB’s 44th Annual Conference in Austin. A full list of award winners, as well as more information about the conference, can be found at www.ktb.org.

Region 13 Chef to School Initiative Photo Shoot

Today the Region 13 Education Service Center's Child Nutrition Department took pictures with some our 3rd grade students in the garden and the cafeteria. The pictures will be used in a brochure promoting the Chef to School Initiative in the Central Texas area. We were excited to be apart of this initiative and enjoyed tasting all the fruits and vegetables prepared for today's cafeteria lines. Chef Bev was amazing with the students and taught them so much about where the fruits and vegetables were grown and how they are prepared.

Bike to Work (School) Week Going Strong

Bike to Work Week is a National Campaign to encourage people to ride their bikes to work and reduce the number of vehicles on the road. It's also great fitness and the weather has been great for the week's celebration.

Students enjoyed a Magic Show compliments of the Smithville Public Library. Each year the Smithville Public Library hosts a summer reading program with a show for the elementary students. 5th Annual Fun Run

Smithville Elementary enjoyed beautiful weather Friday for their 5th Annual Fun Run. The fun run is organized by the Physical Education staff and their Specials Team. It is quite an organizational feat to organize a fun run with over 400 participants. Each year the school loads up on buses and takes a ride to the high school field where students, staff, and friends participate in a run/walk of a mile. Upon finishing each student and staff member receive a bottle of water donated by Bluebonnet Electric, oranges donated by the Child Nutrition Department, and a t-shirt made possible by many donors. As you can see in the pictures fun was had by all!

Read In Finale to Children's Book Week

Our librarian, Mrs. Gutierrez, organized a fantastic event to complete Children's Book Week. We began our day together with the video announcements then the reading fun began. We were treated to special readings from Assistant Superintendent, Cheryl Burns who read Children Make Terrible Pets. She was followed by Superintendent Dr. Rock McNulty who read How I Became a Pirate. At this time everyone in the auditorium enjoyed a book, magazine, or newspaper they brought to the Read-In. Following the quiet reading time, SES Principal Ana Murray read City Dog, Country Frog and to close out the Read-In, our Librarian Krsytel Gutierrez read The Uglified Ducky. The Read-In was a great experience and it was amazing how fast the hour went.

The winner of the Battle of the Books contest for favorite children's book character is......Greg Heffley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

City Dog, Country Frog

Mrs. Gutierrez suggested this book for me to read at the Read-In this Friday. I knew immediately that she picked a good book for me, a dog was one of the main characters.

In the book City Dog reminded me of my young Golden Retriever Sundance "Sunny". Sunny is always full of energy, loves to run, and is always on an adventure. I love a good book and this is one I'll add to my list of recommendations.

The very day Mrs. G suggested I read this book I came home to find my young Golden "Sunny" playing with, yes you guessed it, a frog!

I'll be sharing this book Friday morning at the Read-In. Hope you enjoy, I did!

Children's Book Week Review for Wednesday

Today's book review is about The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare.

This book was recommended by a 4th grade student.

The Sign of the Beaver kept me reading chapter after chapter. When I first began to read it I couldn't put it down. I felt as if I had moved along with Matt and his father into the Maine wilderness to build a new home and start a new life.

Each chapter brings a new twist to Matt's situation as he awaits the return of his father, mother, and siblings. My heart was pounding when Matt had unexpected visitors and when he got himself in a dangerous predicament.

If you like suspense and adventure you should check out this book.

I must say this book is now one of my favorites! I love the story and could feel the emotion of the characters from the beginning. The book is engaging and funny. I love funny books! Children's Book Week

This week we will be celebrating Children's Book Week. Our Librarian, Krystel Guiterrez, has fun activities scheduled all week including Skyping with children's authors, Battle of the Books Contest, class book readings, and a Read-In on Friday in the Red Brick Auditorium.

As a part of Children's Book Week I want to share about a book that was recently recommended to me by a 4th grade student. The book is titled The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J. K. Rowling.

I enjoyed reading the book and was fascinated by the author's ability to engage young readers with the short stories. Not being a reader of Harry Potter books, I was equally amazed when I found out that this book came from one of the novels in the Harry Potter series. Each story grabbed my attention leaving me eager to turn the page for more.

My 4th grader who recommended the book did tell me that I would probably not like the story of The Warlock's Hairy Heart, and he was correct. The book The Tales of Beedle the Bard is available in our school library - check it out!

Junior Harvester's Open House

The 5th grade Junior Harvesters hosted their Open House today in the garden. The weather was fantastic as the students shared their semester long experience with their families. The festivities of the Open House included a donation from the Child Nutrition Department Director Candy Biehle. Mrs. Biehle presented Mrs. Medrano and the Junior Harvesters two books on gardening and cooking to be placed in the school library in their honor. Mrs. Biehle has been very helpful with the Junior Harvesters providing a guidance and a workspace for the food tasting events with the garden harvests.

The students prepared hors d'ouuvres with foods from the garden including kale, spinach, red and green leaf lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, thyme, squash, cilantro, lime, strawberries, and chives to share with guests. Students also prepared information about the plants grown in each bed talking to groups as they explored the garden.

One of the incredible moments was when the students released butterflies in the butterfly garden. Listening to the students reactions and amazement of the event was unforgettable.

The Inaugural Junior Harvesters have set a standard for the many groups to follow. Over the semester they have built a garden, planted and grown plants, shared their harvest with the school, and have grown plants from seed they will take home.

Next week our cafeteria will begin using vegetable from the garden in school lunches.

The garden is an amazing addition to our school and it's success is due to Mrs. Medrano's love of nature and time with the children.

Great Salad in the Cafe

Kudos to our Child Nutrition Department on their salad bar! I had the most incredible salad from our school cafeteria salad bar on Tuesday. The salad bar has an awesome selection to choose from as you can see in the picture below. This is where my salad came to life. Picture this: green leaf lettuce, spinach, red and green bell pepper strips, cauliflower crowns, brown rice, shredded cheese, cucumber slices and a light drizzle of Italian dressing. Yum! It was amazing - flavorful and very filling!

The salad described above, and other variations, are available for students and staff to build daily. The choices begin with a basic helping of green leaf lettuce, carrots, and either turkey, ham, or cheese. The next step of building the salad comes from the individual... As you can see below there are plenty of sides to add to the salad.

The next time you have lunch with your child drop by the salad bar and see what creation you can make!

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for our Outdoor Learning Center

Smithville Elementary held it's official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony today to celebrate the completion of the Outdoor Learning Center. The OLC was made possible through the Lowe's Toolbox for Education Grant and the support of friends and volunteers of SES.

Attendees were treated to two musical pieces by the 5th Grade Tiger Tones under the direction of our music teacher Cathy Sherrill. The students have been practicing before school and during their recess time for months. The crowd was in awe of their performance!

To officially recognize the Outdoor Learning Center, our Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Cheryl Burns, cut the ribbon held by Mrs. Medrano and Amy & Chris Bruder.

SES Early Morning Bike Clinic

Smithville Elementary hosted it's first bike clinic Wednesday morning and volunteers worked on 18 bikes in 45 minutes! Volunteers Officer Greg Stewart, Coach Ramsay, and Rob Remlinger checked bike chains, aired up tires, and made other minor adjustments to student and staff bikes. Volunteers arrived beginning at 7 a.m. and by 7:15 a.m. students were lined up to have their bikes inspected. Helmets were also supplied for students riding bikes that needed them.

The bike tools, supplies, and helmets were made possible through the Safe Routes to School Grant. Thank you to Jill Strube with the City of Smithville for helping to secure the items for our students and the bike clinic.

Smithville Elementary plans to host another bike clinic in May to check bikes for summer riding. This clinic will be advertised through announcements, our blog, facebook, and twitter account.

Junior Harvesters' Food Tasting a Huge Success!

Thursday, March 31st, the Smithville Elementary Jr. Harvesters hosted their first food tasting consisting of vegetables and herbs from the garden. On Wednesday Junior Harvesters prepared the food to be served on Thursday washing, cutting and mixing the foods in the cafeteria office with guidance from Debi Salas and Candy Biehle of the SISD Child Nutrition Department. The aroma of the vegetables and herbs being prepared was incredible consuming the offices with tantalizing smells.
   Along with SISD Child Nutrition Director, Candy Biehle, Mrs. Medrano and her Junior Harvesters were busy preparing wraps using a variety of ingredients from the garden such as red leaf lettuce, mustard greens, spinach, chives, onion, leeks, and cilantro. Baked kale chips were prepared by the Child Nutrition staff using olive oil and salt & pepper. Mrs. Medrano prepared a very tasty tea using lemon balm, lemon grass, and mint from the garden as well.
   The food tasting event was a huge success with students asking for seconds and thirds. The SES Junior Harvesters will have more food tasting events for our 3rd & 4th grade students in the weeks to come.
   Don't be surprised if your 5th grader starts asking for kale chips, lettuce wraps, or mint tea!

SES Earns Gold Acknowledgments from T.E.A.

SISD Superintendent, Dr. Rock McNulty, presented the students and staff of Smithville Elementary with three Gold Performance Acknowledgments from the Texas Education Agency during the March School Board Meeting last night. Based upon accountability data, the Texas Education Agency awards Gold Performance Recognitions on an annual basis. This year, Smithville Elementary earned the acknowledgments in Commended Performance in Reading/ELA & Science and Comparable Improvement in Reading.

Congratulations to all students and staff for earning these acknowledgments.

Playing with the Kids, and Losing

Today I ventured into the gym and found myself in a fun game of dodgeball with 4th graders. Some would say I am too old to be playing a game like this and shouldn't take advantage of the kids. Well let me set the record straight, the kids can play! They have great aim, plenty of energy, and the balls are much better than what I grew up playing with. I even got smacked in the face, by a girl with a good arm let me add, and was fine! Back-in-the-day, I would have been out on the floor after a hit like that.

I also don't remember the last time I had so many kids throwing things at me, and at one time! We had such a great time and I was glad I visited. I had so much fun I returned later in the day to play with 3rd grade. Let me warn everyone, they can throw too.

The game was fun and the kids were very impressive with their skill and positive attitude. They were focused on the game and wanted to win but had the best sportsmanship I've seen in a long time. This came as no surprise as we have constant reminders of good attitudes at school.

I will play with these kids any day, mainly due to their competitive and fun attitude. I also have a score to settle - I sat out many times.
