5th Grade Co-Teaching Team of Paulette Bonorden & Jason Peterson

A few words from Paulette Bonorden
My name is Paulette Bonorden.  I am originally from Wharton, Texas and graduated from high school there.  After graduation, I attended Wharton County Junior College where I took my basics.  I, then, went on to the University of Houston-Victoria from which I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education and a Specialization in Reading.  This coming year will be my twenty-first year in teaching, twelve of which have been here at Smithville Elementary.  During these past twelve years, I’ve taught 5th grade Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies.  I am so excited because this year Jason Peterson and I will be co-teaching 5th grade.  With his strengths in Math and Science and mine in Language Arts and Science, it’s going to be a GREAT year!

A few words from Jason Peterson
Jason Peterson bio - I have lived in Smithville since 2001 and I am starting my 10 year at Smithville Elementary. I enjoy hunting, fishing, and exercise. I have been coaching Special Olympics here at Smithville since 2007.

Wow! What an Incredible 'First Day of School'!

Students of Smithville Elementary were eager to get back to school yesterday checking out who was in their classrooms and learning about the great things we have planned for them this year.  We all began our day in classrooms before heading to our first Rise & Shine Assembly of the year.  Students were singing the songs as they entered and then, in true patriotic fashion, respectfully recited the pledges, before settling down to listen to introductions and announcements.

Once Rise & Shine was complete, teachers and students toured the campus reviewing our Tiger Expectations.  When you visit, you will notice we have posters everywhere outlining the expectations we have to keep everyone safe, productive, and happy.  The Tiger Expectations were designed using the PBIS (Positive Behavior and Intervention Support) model, focusing on expectations in lieu of consequences.  (I must note that we still have a discipline system that will be enforced if necessary.)

You will also notice a beautiful Tiger paw painted on the wall in the main building.  This Tiger paw is a part of our Tiger Expectations as well.  Students will earn Tiger Tickets for exhibiting Tiger Expectations and good manners throughout the year.  Students will then place their Tickets in the grade appropriate box by the office for a chance to win a 'Picnic with a Friend' on the cafeteria stage and a chance to paint their hand print on the Tiger Paw wall!  Exciting!

Important note: Students must be present to win the Tiger Paw hand print drawing, which will take place on Friday afternoons.

4th Grade Co-Teaching Team of Jana Patrolia & Cathy Kirby

A few words from Jana Patrolia
I grew up and spent my childhood years in sultry Houston, TX. Then, I attended Texas A&M University until I graduated in 1985 with a degree in business computer science and worked in the business world as a programmer/analyst for five years. During this time, I discovered that I had a passion for teaching.  So, I went back to college to pursue this passion and became certified as an elementary teacher.  After living and teaching in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, I finally landed in the picturesque town of Smithville, TX.  I have enjoyed living here for the past eighteen years with my husband, Rick, son, Matthew, and multiple pets.  This will be my nineteenth year as a teacher with the Smithville ISD.  I have taught 5th grade, 3rd grade, and most recently worked as a math intervention teacher.  I have been on both the Brown Primary and Smithville Elementary School campuses.  I am very excited to join the 4th grade team this year.  In my spare time, I love to read by the pool, surf the web, and spend time with my family.  I can't wait to see my students “soar to success” this year.

A few words from Cathy Kirby
My name is Mrs.Catherine Kirby.   I have lived in the country near Smithville  for over 30 years and raised two fine young men who are products of the Smithville Schools.  I have worked for the Smithville School District for over 15 of those years.

This year I will transition onto the Special Ed team where I will co-teach a fourth grade class with another professional in my old room.  Though I will miss being a solo teacher, I have always loved the inclusion teaching model and know this is an exciting opportunity for both students and educators.   I look forward to meeting my new students and their parents.

Meet our New Counselor, Sarah Vinklarek

Hi!  My name is Sarah Vinklarek.  Although this will be my first year to serve as the school counselor, I have worked on the elementary campus for the last five years as a third grade teacher.  I am a graduate of Smithville High School and Southwest Texas State University, where I graduated with a B.A. in Political Science.  I am currently a graduate student at Lamar University.  I have been married for six years to my husband, Matthew, and we have two children, Sophie and Samuel.  Our family also includes our spirited yellow lab, Charles.  I am so excited about the upcoming school year and can’t wait to see all of the new and returning smiling faces on our campus!

Welcome Special Education Teacher, Cary Sargent

I am thrilled to be teaching Life Skills at Smithville Elementary this year!   Since retiring from sandwich-making 10 years ago (you may remember me from The Deli Station), I have been teaching Special Education in La Grange and Bastrop—and have been known to venture across Texas to teach a little Home Economics. I have two grown children, Seth and Claire, and a daughter-in-law, Lara (all brilliant, adventurous and very successful). I also have a German shepherd, Zeus, who takes me for nice long walks. I like to listen to NPR while driving, gardening, cleaning house, and when I’m not reading, skyping with the kids, or walking with Zeus.
