Video Announcements Debut 2.24.11

Thursday morning Smithville Elementary students anxiously awaited the debut of the Tiger News video announcements as they were seen for the first time. Shortly after the 8:10 bell the computers were powered up and LCD projectors were turned on in preparation for the announcements.

Then Ms. Murray came over the P.A. and the announcements began. The announcements began with Mrs. Bull's class leading the pledges, singing, moment of silence, and school creed. Then the Tiger Times News Crew took over with a look at what was coming on Thursday, the weather forecast, and a short review of the week by Ms. Murray. The video announcements were awesome and the students in class loved them. Throughout the day students asked if we were doing this everyday! I love this excitement.

The production was put on by Mrs. Gutierrez and the Tiger Times News Crew and pushed through our intranet on campus. The video announcements are well on their way to being a weekly event that all will look forward to seeing.

Mrs. C. Vinklarek's Class - How much water does it take to fill the bird bath?

Mrs. C. Vinklarek's class wanted to know how much water it took to fill the bird bath so Mrs. C.V. took her class outside to find out. It was a great teaching moment as the students used their cup, pint, quart, and gallon jars to calculate the answer. If you see any of them you should ask?

SES Faculty Teaching Each Other

SES teachers spent Wednesday after school learning from each other. Teachers shared strategies, websites, learning tools, and information about programs on our campus they've learned about from workshops and conventions. The topics were: Study Hall, human number lines, differentiation, trailers and technology applications and websites.
Thanks to Mrs. Kennon, Mrs. Sweeny, Mrs. Mathis, Mrs. Myers, Mrs. Hanna and Mrs. Gutierrez for presenting to the faculty.
The faculty learned and had a little fun too.

Ms. Swearingen's Class & the Water Cycle

Students in Ms. Swearingen's class learned about the Water Cycle today. Each student took a random trip as a water molecule and talked about their 'cycle' with the whole group.

It's interesting how the students 'cycles' were so different and they thought they were exciting.

The students got to wear their 'water cycle' as a bracelet in the end. As you can see in the pictures, Ms. Murray got in on the action.

Camp Write-a-thon Photos

4th Grade students enjoyed their 'camp out' during Camp Write-a-thon this week. As you can see students set up 'camp' in the classrooms and worked on writing. This is an annual event that is always over too soon. Students had a blast writing, singing camp songs, and other outdoor fun all inside during these crazy cold days.

Planting Day for the Junior Harvesters

These pictures are of Mr. Lowery and Mrs. Medrano working with Junior Harvesters planting onions and lettuce. The Junior Harvesters learned that onions were planted at about an inch depth. The lettuce was broadcast and only slightly covered with soil because the seeds need the sun to germinate. The Junior Harvesters then lightly tapped the soil to ensure that the seeds didn't blow away.

Not only will we have a bountiful harvest, our students will learn so much they can teach their parents in their home gardens.

The Empty Bowl Project - Step 1 Painting

Our students are having a blast painting bowls. They are doing a great job and we are so proud of them for helping our community with The Emtpy Bowl Project.

5th Graders Helping with The Empty Bowl Project

Helping Feed People in Need

The Empty Bowl Project is a national grassroots effort to fight hunger. The basic premise is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to organizations working to end hunger and food insecurity.

Smithville Elementary 5th grade students will be painting and glazing bowls to be used in The Empty Bowl Project in April. Jo Watts will be working with our students during the next couple of weeks helping them contribute to this wonderful cause.

The Smithville Food Pantry, Smithville Community Gardens & Lost Pines Artisan's Alliance are working together to bring a fun, informative day to the citizens of Smithville and the surrounding areas. Join them on Saturday, April 16, 10am - 3pm, for a day of informative speakers who will discuss issues as varied as pocket gardens, community involvement in hunger programs, gardening tips for home and community, landscaping and much more. Vendors will be on site offering fresh vegetables, gardening and landscaping tools. Soups will be served throughout the day (see the Program Schedule for times). Soups and breads are donated by local restaurants.
